In 2024, Thailand has emerged as a key player in driving the remarkable growth of Southeast Asia’s cruise tourism, joining Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, and other nations in a collective effort that has reshaped the global tourism landscape. This collaboration has resulted in a groundbreaking ten billion US dollars contribution to the global economy, a milestone that underscores the region’s rising prominence in the cruise industry. With nearly four million passengers flocking to Southeast Asia, the region is setting new benchmarks for the global cruise sector, enhancing economic output, creating thousands of jobs, and establishing itself as a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide.
Southeast Asia’s Cruise Industry Sees Remarkable Growth in 2024: Contributing US$10 Billion to Global Economy
In 2024, Southeast Asia’s cruise industry made a striking mark on the global stage, contributing a substantial US$10 billion (S$12.9 billion) to the worldwide economy. This significant contribution represents five percent of the global cruise industry output, showcasing the region’s rapidly growing prominence as a key player in the cruise tourism sector. The data, part of a groundbreaking Economic Impact Assessment of Cruise Tourism for Southeast Asia, underscores the growing economic footprint of the cruise industry across the region.
The report, commissioned by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and compiled by Tourism Economics in collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board, highlights the far-reaching impact of cruise tourism on the Southeast Asian economy. With a passenger influx of 3.9 million people in 2024, the region accounted for two percent of the global total of 186 million cruise passengers. This robust figure illustrates Southeast Asia’s increasing appeal as a top destination for cruise travelers, adding to its rising prominence in the global tourism industry.
