Indian Railways Achieves Electrification Milestone, Expands High-Speed and Safety Systems
Indian Railways has reached a major electrification milestone with 99.6 percent of its broad gauge network now electrified, while also expanding high-speed tracks capable of supporting faster train operations and rolling out advanced safety systems like Kavach across key routes. These developments are part of a large-scale modernisation push aimed at reducing fuel costs, cutting emissions, improving train speeds, and enhancing passenger safety and reliability across the nationwide rail network.
Indian Railways has entered a new phase of transformation, with 99.6 percent of its broad gauge network now electrified. This milestone reflects a sweeping shift toward cleaner energy, lower operating costs, and a more reliable rail system, reinforcing the network’s position as a critical pillar of India’s transport infrastructure.
Running close to 25,000 trains every day, the railway system continues to serve as a lifeline for millions. In the financial year 2025–26, it handled an estimated 741 crore passenger journeys, demonstrating its unmatched scale in public transport. Alongside passenger movement, freight operations also delivered record-breaking performance, reaching 1,670 million tonnes. This surge has been supported by strong demand across core sectors such as energy, construction, and agriculture. Total revenue for the year is estimated at around ₹80,000 crore, highlighting stable financial momentum.
