UK: Birmingham's New Hotel Investment Model Targets More Visitors and Events
Birmingham has established its first Accommodation Business Improvement District (ABID), following positive votes from hotels and other accommodation providers. ABID will allow the sector to raise funds and make investments to enhance Birmingham’s visitor economy and business/leisure professions. The first ABID will allow the city’s accommodation providers to establish a collaborative platform to increase the number of visitors and the number of overnight stays, while providing support for major events and improving tourism and business opportunities.
The landmark decision places Birmingham alongside cities such as Manchester and Liverpool, which have used similar collective investment schemes to support tourism growth, attract more visitors and increase overnight stays
The ballot received strong support from eligible accommodation providers, with 64% of votes cast in favour of the proposal. The plan also secured backing from 59% of the total rateable value represented in the vote, approving the 2027–2032 Business Plan.
