How the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s 65-Year Journey Transformed Thailand Into a Leading Destination for Sustainable Tourism, Economic Growth, and Cultural Exploration

On March 18, 2025, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) celebrates its remarkable 65-year journey, marking over six decades of dedication to establishing Thailand as one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Through unwavering efforts, TAT has evolved from a small tourism office into a globally recognized leader in sustainable tourism, blending economic growth with environmental responsibility, cultural preservation, and community-driven development. The Journey of TAT: From Inception to Global Leadership The story of tourism in Thailand began in 1924, when Field Marshal Prince Krom Phra Kampaengphet Akrayothin, as Commander of the State Railway of Thailand, took the first steps in promoting Thailand internationally. In 1936, Thailand’s Ministry of Economic Affairs introduced its first national tourism development plan. However, World War II delayed these efforts. In the 1950s, the government recognized the growing potential of tourism and revived its efforts by creating a structured tourism strategy. By 1960, the Tourist Organization of Thailand (TOT) was founded on March 18, under the guidance of Prime Minister Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, laying the groundwork for what would become a national tourism powerhouse.
