As reported by The Straits Times, more travelers are journeying to Japan specifically to explore iconic anime destinations. From well-known districts in Tokyo to hidden gems in rural Japan, these “anime pilgrimages” are reshaping the tourism landscape.
Data from the Japan Tourism Agency reveals a notable surge in international visitors drawn to anime and film-related sites, with the percentage rising from 4.6% in 2019 to 7.5% in 2023.
A prime example is Noshiro City in Akita Prefecture, where Noshiro Science and Technology High School, the inspiration for Sannoh Technical High School in the anime Slam Dunk, has gained global attention following the success of The First Slam Dunk in 2022. The town now attracts foreign tourists who attend local basketball team practices, and the Noshiro Basketball Museum has seen a 5.5-fold increase in international visitors since 2019.
