Sri Lanka Launches QR Fuel System to Support Tourism Amid Middle East Dip
In a major step forward to help the tourism industry during trying times, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe revealed that a special QR code system will be introduced to ensure fuel availability for tourism-related businesses. Scheduled to be implemented on 16 March 2026, the new system will work towards making the distribution of fuel more efficient, so that hotels, transportation services, and tour operators can operate with ease.
This new system, which was previously launched in Sri Lanka, will be reintroduced to help ease the burden of fuel shortages that the tourism industry is currently facing. Since fuel shortages are creating problems for the tourism industry, the QR code system will work towards making fuel distribution more efficient so that the tourism industry is not affected during trying times.
The introduction of this system comes at a critical juncture, as tourism is one of Sri Lanka’s most important economic pillars. By ensuring a steady supply of fuel for tourism businesses, the government is not only addressing immediate challenges but also taking proactive steps to safeguard the long-term stability of the sector. This action highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring that Sri Lanka’s tourism industry remains resilient, even amid global challenges.
In the future, the QR code system is expected to play a significant role in boosting tourism confidence, especially for international tourists who may otherwise be hesitant due to the logistical hurdles. By ensuring uninterrupted tourism services, this initiative can help restore trust and attract more visitors, contributing to Sri Lanka’s tourism growth and economic recovery.
