Bengaluru–Ernakulam Vande Bharat Express Adds More Coaches to Meet Rising Travel Demand

India is rapidly strengthening its high-speed rail infrastructure as Southern Railway moves to expand the Bengaluru–Ernakulam Vande Bharat Express with a major coach augmentation plan aimed at addressing surging passenger demand and the upcoming festive travel rush. The decision comes in response to consistently high occupancy levels on this key inter-state corridor between Karnataka and Kerala, where tickets have been frequently sold out since the train’s launch. By doubling capacity ahead of the Onam travel season, Indian Railways is taking a proactive step to ease congestion, improve seat availability, and ensure smoother, more reliable travel for thousands of passengers during peak demand periods. Southern Railway has announced a significant capacity expansion for the Bengaluru–Ernakulam Vande Bharat Express, one of South India’s most in-demand semi-high-speed train services, by doubling its coach composition ahead of the upcoming festive travel season. The decision comes in response to sustained high passenger occupancy and growing demand on the key intercity corridor connecting Karnataka and Kerala in India. The upgrade will increase the train from its current 8-coach configuration to a 16-coach rake, effectively doubling its seating capacity. This enhancement is scheduled to be implemented in the first week of July, strategically aligned just before the Onam festive travel period, when passenger traffic between Bengaluru and Kerala typically rises sharply due to family reunions, tourism flows, and return travel.
