Thailand Revives Bangkok Canal Transport to Improve Tourism and Urban Mobility
Thailand is advancing a major urban mobility shift through a new canal-based taxi boat plan on the Phasi Charoen waterway in Bangkok, as rising road congestion on Phet Kasem Road and growing demand for seamless tourism connectivity have driven the push to reintroduce water transport linking rail stations and key cultural attractions.
Thailand is set to reshape urban travel in Bangkok with a new water transport revival along the Phasi Charoen canal. The Transport Ministry is preparing two pilot schemes focused on Taxi Boat services that are expected to improve mobility, reduce road congestion, and unlock new tourism opportunities across the canal-side communities of the Thai capital. The initiative places water transport back into the centre of Bangkok’s evolving transport strategy, linking rail systems, residential zones and cultural attractions through a revived canal network.
The project is being developed as part of a wider effort to ease chronic traffic pressure on major roads such as Phet Kasem Road, while also creating more sustainable and flexible travel options for residents and visitors. The Phasi Charoen canal has been identified as a strategic route capable of supporting both daily commuting and tourism-based movement.
