Malaysia Tourism Shifts as Thailand, Vietnam Revamp Visitor Trends
For decades, Malaysia has been a formidable player in the Asian tourism sector, but its performance in 2025 has eclipsed all historical projections. According to official data from Tourism Malaysia, the nation welcomed an astonishing 42.2 million international visitors in 2025. To put this figure into perspective, it represents an 11.2% year-on-year increase from the 38 million visitors recorded in 2024, and a massive 20.4% surge compared to pre-pandemic figures in 2019. This is not accidental growth; it is the result of a meticulously executed state strategy. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently outlined the government’s highly coordinated “whole-of-government” approach ahead of the massive Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign. Realizing the strategic importance of tourism to the national GDP and fiscal stability, the Tourism and Culture Cabinet Committee (JKPK) has integrated various ministries to streamline the visitor experience.
