Maldives seeks help to save its islands from submerging

The Maldives might lose entire islands if the island nation fails to acquire finances to fight the challenges of climate change on an urgent basis. The archipelago’s former President Mohamed Nasheed famously conducted an underwater cabinet meeting to draw attention to global warming a decade ago, also focussing on the submerging land. However, to date, Maldives is still struggling to access money to build critical infrastructures like sea walls. Popularly known for its white-sand beaches and scenic water locations, this place has always been a favorite among the luxury holiday-makers, though conditions are deteriorating at a much deeper level. The Maldives and other vulnerable countries, at the UN climate talks held in Madrid, pushed for concrete moves regarding fresh funding to help them tackle disasters and longer-term damage linked to climate change, which failed. The Foreign Minister, however, was hopeful for the next round of talks that is slated for November and expects better results.
