Indian Travellers Flock To Switzerland Beyond Summer, Exploring New Destinations
Indian tourists are shifting from summer visits to Switzerland, now exploring the country’s stunning autumn landscapes and festive winter activities.
Indian tourists have traditionally flocked to Switzerland during the summer months, particularly in May and June, aligning with school holidays and offering a respite from the intense Indian heat. However, a noticeable shift has emerged in recent years, with more Indian travellers—including couples, friends, and solo adventurers—choosing to visit Switzerland in the autumn and winter seasons.
Switzerland is witnessing an increasing influx of Indian tourists beyond the summer months. In 2023, the country recorded over 602,000 overnight stays from Indian visitors, making India Switzerland’s seventh-largest foreign market. This number is projected to surpass 900,000 within the next five years.
This evolving trend was discussed at a recent event hosted by Switzerland Tourism at the Mumbai residence of Consul General Martin Maier. Present were Martin Nydegger, CEO of Switzerland Tourism, Christian Schoch, Director for India, and Ritu Sharma, Deputy Director and Marketing Head for India. The event emphasized the growing appeal of Switzerland during the off-peak seasons and the importance of a year-round tourism strategy.
While summer has been the preferred time for Indian tourists to visit Switzerland, there is growing interest in the country’s stunning autumn landscapes and festive winter experiences. Activities such as Christmas markets, snowshoeing, sledging, and scenic winter excursions have gained popularity among Indian travellers. Winter in Switzerland was once associated primarily with skiing, limiting its appeal to some, but non-skiing activities have expanded its attraction.
Top destinations like Zurich, Lucerne, and Interlaken are now offering seasonal experiences that draw Indian visitors. Zurich, Switzerland’s financial hub, becomes a haven in autumn with cool weather and vibrant foliage. Lucerne dazzles in the winter with Christmas markets, the LiLu Light Festival, and live concerts. Interlaken, famous for adventure sports, provides year-round thrills with activities such as paragliding and kayaking.
Switzerland Tourism has been proactive in promoting these seasonal attractions, with high-profile campaigns featuring tennis icon Roger Federer and Indian ambassador Neeraj Chopra leading the winter campaign. Additionally, the ‘Travel Better’ initiative encourages Indian visitors to embrace sustainable travel practices, urging them to stay longer, experience local culture, and utilize the efficient Swiss Travel System.
As Indian tourists continue to explore Switzerland across all seasons, the country is dedicated to showcasing its hidden gems while maintaining its status as a top destination for Indian travellers.
