Alstom Foundation Empowers Indigenous Women in Yucatán and Campeche Through a Revolutionary Sustainable Beekeeping Project

The Alstom Foundation, in collaboration with Fundación Por una Nueva Solución (Educampo), is championing a transformative initiative in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The project, titled “Mayan Guardians of the Melipona Bee: Empowerment and Sustainable Economic Reactivation,” is designed to uplift 200 indigenous and rural women across Campeche and Yucatán by fostering sustainable beekeeping practices. Promoting Leadership Through Sustainable Bee Farming This initiative seeks to bolster women’s leadership and economic independence by supporting the cultivation, processing, and commercialization of melipona honey. The Melipona bee, a stingless species native to the region, plays a crucial role in both the environment and cultural heritage of the Mayan communities. By engaging in meliponiculture, these women are not only generating income but also safeguarding an ancient tradition vital to local biodiversity.
