Airlines forecast higher fares after energy price spike

Airlines will pass on rising oil prices to passengers through higher fares relatively quickly, but the spike in energy costs will worsen the industry's overall outlook in 2022, the head of the International Air Transport Association said on Wednesday. Speaking after JetBlue launched a counter-bid for US budget carrier Spirit Airlines, Director General Willie Walsh also said he saw further scope for consolidation among airlines in the United States. "It clearly took the market by surprise," Walsh told a regular industry news briefing. "It is evidence that the financial strength of US airlines does stand out from the rest of the world," he said, adding that consumers had benefited from major investments in new products. IATA said global passenger traffic rebounded in February as the impact of the Omicron variant retreated outside Asia. The war in Ukraine has yet to feed through into monthly data. In February, passenger traffic stood at 54.5 per cent of levels seen in the same month of 2019, up from 50.6 per cent in January but below the 55.1 per cent seen in December. Cargo volumes were at 111.9 per cent. Airlines are grappling with a rise in oil prices which accelerated after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a move Moscow describes as a "special military operation". The rise has worsened an outlook already expected to include an industry-wide loss in 2022, although some airlines will make a profit as the world stages an uneven recovery, Walsh said. In the past, the rule of thumb was that oil prices would take six months to feed through to airfares, he added. But that could happen more quickly because of the market's dramatic volatility as well as lower-than-usual levels of forward bookings already in the system following the pandemic. Walsh also said airlines and airports were moving to tackle staff shortages after a spike in demand, but some factors were outside their control. Thousands of holidaymakers have seen getaways disrupted or cancelled because airlines and airports do not have enough staff to meet the recovery in demand as pandemic restrictions are eased in Europe. "The challenge the industry faces is bringing back front- line staff where they require background security checks," Walsh said, adding that a process which used to take five to six weeks is taking "much longer now".

Uttarakhand tourism board develops app to keep pilgrims safe

Uttarakhand Tourism Board Develops has developed a mobile app for the safety of devotees coming this year on Char Dham yatra or a pilgrimage to the Hemkund Sahib. The pilgrims coming on a visit to the four Himalayan temples of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri and the famous Sikh shrine of Hemkund Sahib will have to instal the app 'Tourist Care System' on their mobile phones and register themselves on it, a senior official said. Once they have registered themselves on the app, a tab will be kept on their movement en route to the five centres of faith with the help of 28 high definition cameras put up at 14 pre-identified locations along the travel route, Tourism Secretary Dilip Jawalkar said. Pilgrims will get weather updates issued by the meteorological department on the app and advance notifications in case of any weather-related disruptions or impediments like landslides along the way, he said. The app will have all relevant details about the pilgrims. The Char Dham Yatra begins this year on May 3 with the opening of the Yamunotri and Gangotri temples. When asked how pilgrims who are not comfortable using android phones will avail of the facility, he said they will be given a wristband with an individual QR code which will be connected to the Tourist Care System App and all relevant information will be shared with them right from the moment they set out on their journey and till their destinations, Jawalkar said. He also informed that the number plate of the tourist's vehicle will be linked to the said app through an automatic number plate recorder. After that, all the information about the route, weather updates and alerts will be available to all the passengers through the app. A control room at the UTDB headquarters will function 24x7 to ensure that the system works well, he said. The need to develop an app like this had begun to be felt after the 2013 Kedarnath disaster in which thousands of people were killed and thousands went missing.

Qantas launches direct flights on Sydney and Bengaluru route

Australia’s national airline Qantas will fly non-stop from Bengaluru to Sydney and is finalising a codeshare partnership with IndiGo to make travel between India and Australia easier. From 14 September, Qantas will operate four weekly return flights between Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru and Sydney’s Kingsford Smith International Airport with its widebody Airbus A330 aircraft. These are the first direct flights between Australia and southern India by any airline, cutting almost three hours off the current fastest trip between Bengaluru and Sydney. The Bengaluru community has strong connections with Australia for both business travel and people visiting friends and relatives. Famous for its beautiful beaches and iconic landmarks the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, Sydney is one of the world’s most iconic cities. The new route is being supported by Bengaluru’s award-winning Kempegowda International Airport. Qantas will continue to operate up to five flights a week between Melbourne and Delhi, making it the only airline offering direct flights between both northern and southern India and Australia. Travellers are also set to benefit from improved one-stop access to Sydney from more than 50 Indian cities, as part of a proposed codeshare agreement between Qantas and IndiGo. Once finalised, customers will have more convenient access from not only the major Indian cities, but many popular regional cities such as Pune and Goa. The proposed codeshare agreement will enable seamless connections via Bengaluru, Delhi, or Singapore into Australia’s largest capital cities. Qantas is Australia’s leading premium airline, with all customers receiving complimentary food, drinks, baggage, and inflight entertainment. As part of the proposed agreement, customers who join the Qantas Frequent Flyer program will be able to earn and redeem points on connecting IndiGo flights (QF code only) and IndiGo will recognise Qantas Frequent Flyer benefits for tiered members (Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One) including priority check-in, additional baggage allowance and priority baggage. Qantas customers travelling on IndiGo will enjoy the same baggage allowance for the entire journey as well as complimentary food and drinks. The partnership will extend to Jetstar customers who will be able to book connecting flights on IndiGo services through its Jetstar Connect platform on jetstar.com, currently intended to start from late April. IndiGo will introduce reciprocal benefits for its customers to connect on Qantas and Jetstar in the future. Sydney-Bengaluru flights go on sale today starting from ₹78,380 return. Alan Joyce, Group CEO, Qantas said that the demand for direct flights between Australia and India had grown steadily since both countries reopened their borders. He said, “For the first time southern India will have a direct connection to Australia, which will make travel between the two countries more convenient and much faster for customers. “The signing of the Australia-India free trade agreement will also drive travel demand as trade and investment links expand between Australia and India’s population of more than one billion people. “Our new direct flights from Bengaluru to Sydney, combined with the proposed codeshare with IndiGo, have the potential to reshape the way many people travel between Australia and India.” Qantas continues to offer a Fly Flexible booking policy with unlimited flight date changes available on flights booked before 30 June for travel until 31 December 2022 (fare difference may apply). Hari Marar, MD & CEO, Bangalore International Airport said, “We are delighted to welcome Qantas to BLR Airport, India’s third busiest airport in terms of passengers and cargo. “Australia is a very important market for South India and Bengaluru in particular, for corporates, students and leisure travellers. The newly announced non-stop Bengaluru-Sydney service will further strengthen the position of BLR Airport as the natural gateway for South and Central India. South India contributes the largest share of visitors between Australia and India with Bengaluru strategically located in the midst of the South Indian peninsula. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a second parallel runway and a new terminal, which will be operational later this year, the timing of this flight couldn’t be better. He further added, “We welcome the growing presence of OneWorld Alliance members at BLR Airport with Qantas becoming the 8th member airline to operate out of BLR airport. “The proposed code sharing arrangement between Qantas and IndiGo, BLR Airport’s largest carrier with a large number of non-stop domestic routes, has opened will open up many new one-stop city pairs between South and Central India and Australia. “This is a huge win for consumers across both regions. With BIAL’s commitment towards sustainability, community development, diversity and inclusion, we are delighted to have Qantas, a global partner with shared values. “I am confident that the Bengaluru-Sydney route is just the beginning and we look forward to seeing increased services between both countries.” Ronojoy Dutta, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo, said, “We are pleased to announce our proposed codeshare partnership with Australia’s flag carrier, Qantas Airways following the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement. “Once finalised, this new partnership will enable the Qantas customers to fly to more than 50 unique cities on IndiGo via Bengaluru, Delhi, and Singapore with the access of 41, 33, and 6 destinations per station respectively. “We believe that this strong partnership will not only create seamless connectivity between India and Australia, but also create opportunities for trade and tourism as both nations experience an influx of tourists again. “We look forward to having Qantas’s customers on our lean clean flying machine, as we extend our on-time, affordable, courteous and hassle-free travel experience.” Flights are subject to government and regulatory approval.
