Indonesia to Host Its First International B2B Tourism Event Wonderful Indonesia Tourism Fair (WITF) 2024 in Jakarta

Indonesia is set to make waves in the global tourism industry with its inaugural international B2B tourism event, the Wonderful Indonesia Tourism Fair (WITF) 2024. Scheduled to take place in Jakarta from October 2-4, 2024, this landmark event will be hosted at the Swissotel Jakarta PIK Avenue, strategically located in the rapidly developing Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area. The launch of WITF marks a significant milestone for Indonesia as it seeks to position itself as a major player in the global tourism arena, showcasing the country’s rich diversity beyond its famed island of Bali. A Strategic Venue in the Heart of Jakarta The choice of Swissotel Jakarta PIK Avenue as the venue for WITF 2024 is a strategic one, reflecting the event’s ambition to attract global attention. PIK, often referred to as the new Jakarta city, is a burgeoning tourist destination known for its modern infrastructure, extensive business hubs, entertainment options, and event facilities. Located just a short drive from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, PIK offers unparalleled convenience for international visitors, making it an ideal location for a high-profile event like WITF 2024. Budi Tirtawisata, the chair of the WITF 2024 Steering Committee, emphasized the significance of PIK as the event’s venue. “PIK represents the future of Jakarta, a place where modernity meets tradition. Hosting WITF here allows us to showcase not only the event but also the potential of Jakarta as a world-class destination for business and tourism,” Budi explained. The Vision Behind WITF 2024 The inception of WITF was driven by a shared vision among Indonesia’s tourism leaders and the government to advance inbound tourism and elevate the country’s profile on the global stage. According to Budi, who also serves as the CEO of Panorama Group and the deputy chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI), the idea for WITF was conceived during the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Yogyakarta last year. It was here that both government officials and tourism business players recognized the need for Indonesia to have its own homegrown event that could rival international tourism trade fairs like ITB Berlin and WTM London. “The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MOTCE) shared a dream and wondered why we couldn’t have an event of that caliber,” Budi shared in an exclusive interview with Travel Weekly. “This idea resonated strongly with industry players who had long discussed the need for an international-scale event in Indonesia,” he added. WITF 2024 is entirely self-funded and owned by GIPI, with support and endorsement from MOTCE. A committee comprising nine industry veterans, including ASTINDO chair Pauline Suharno, has been tasked with organizing the event. Their collective goal is to create a platform that not only attracts international buyers but also promotes the diverse tourism offerings across Indonesia’s vast archipelago. Showcasing Indonesia’s Diversity Beyond Bali One of the key objectives of WITF 2024 is to broaden the perception of Indonesia as a tourist destination. While Bali has long been the crown jewel of Indonesia’s tourism industry, WITF aims to highlight the country’s many other attractions that are often overlooked by international travelers. “The idea is to advance inbound tourism in Indonesia. We want to bring in as many guests as possible from abroad to the country,” Budi emphasized. WITF will feature tour operators from across Indonesia, showcasing destinations in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Lampung, Bangka-Belitung, and beyond. The event will also place a spotlight on emerging destinations that are gaining popularity among travelers seeking unique experiences. “Indonesia is not only Bali,” Budi added, stressing the importance of promoting lesser-known regions that offer rich cultural experiences, natural beauty, and adventure opportunities. By doing so, WITF aims to diversify Indonesia’s tourism appeal and attract a broader range of international visitors. As the inaugural Wonderful Indonesia Tourism Fair (WITF) 2024 prepares to open its doors in Jakarta, the event stands as a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to advancing its tourism industry. By highlighting the country’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cities, WITF aims to broaden the global perception of Indonesia as a tourist destination beyond Bali. With the backing of industry leaders, government support, and a vision for the future, WITF 2024 is poised to make a significant impact on the global tourism stage. For those in the travel industry, WITF 2024 offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect, learn, and explore the endless possibilities that Indonesia has to offer. As the countdown to October begins, the world watches with anticipation, ready to witness the dawn of a new era in Indonesian tourism.

India Sees Potential for Tourism Growth with Easier Travel to the U.S.

India and the U.S. are witnessing a steady increase in travel between the two nations, but there is still untapped potential to further enhance tourism. Key solutions proposed at the first Indo-U.S. Tourism and Hospitality Summit, held by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce in Delhi, include the implementation of faster visa processes and the expansion of direct flight options. Challenges and Opportunities in India-U.S. Travel Suman Billa, Additional Secretary with India’s Tourism Ministry, highlighted that a significant portion of India-U.S. air travel currently involves stopovers in third countries like those in the Middle East or Europe. He emphasized that increasing the number of direct flights between India and the U.S. would not only make travel more cost-effective but also improve the convenience for passengers. Despite the benefits, the expansion of direct flight routes remains limited. Presently, Air India, American Airlines, and United Airlines are the primary carriers offering non-stop flights between the two countries. However, there is room for more routes and frequency to meet the growing demand. Visa Processing Improvements While obtaining a U.S. visa is valid for 10 years, the application process remains cumbersome for many travelers. Nevertheless, progress has been made. The U.S. Embassy in India has successfully reduced visa appointment wait times by 75% over the past year, despite a 60% increase in applications. This improvement, achieved through better processes and staffing, has brought down the average wait time for visitor visas from 1,000 days to 250 days. Eric Garcetti, U.S. Ambassador to India, reaffirmed the commitment to addressing the visa backlog, noting that President Joe Biden himself prioritized this issue. At the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce event, Jonathan M Heimer, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the U.S. Commercial Service, reported that the U.S. has processed 60% more visas in the past year with similar resources, issuing over 1.1 million visas—a record number. Short-Term Visa Proposals Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip, suggested the introduction of short-term visas for tourists, a practice already adopted by several other countries. This innovation could further streamline the process for tourists looking to visit the U.S. for shorter stays. India’s Growing Presence in U.S. Tourism Data from the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) indicates that between January and May 2024, India became the second-largest international source market for U.S. tourism, excluding Canada and Mexico. In 2023, 1.7 million Indian tourists visited the U.S., with projections estimating this number could reach 2 million by 2027. Despite this growth, Billa remarked that India has not fully capitalized on its tourism potential. While travel between the two countries is increasing, there is still considerable opportunity for expansion. Promoting India as a Destination At the Skift India Summit, Garcetti pointed out the disparity in travel interest between the two nations. While many Indians are eager to visit the U.S., the reverse is less common. He noted that Americans are less familiar with India as a tourist destination, though there is a growing curiosity that could lead to more balanced travel between the countries. Indian Gen-Z Travelers and Technology The preferences of Indian Gen-Z travelers are shaping the future of travel. According to Booking.com, 70% of surveyed Gen-Z travelers in India are comfortable incorporating technology into their travel plans, including using AI for itinerary suggestions and exploring less-traveled destinations. These travelers prioritize value for money, often seeking discounts and unique experiences, such as skydiving or hot air ballooning. Hong Kong’s Focus on Indian Travelers Hong Kong is targeting Indian travelers, who are among the highest spenders in the region, averaging INR 100,000 ($1,200) per person. In the first half of 2024, 181,000 Indians visited Hong Kong, with the city aiming to attract 560,000 Indian tourists by year-end. The Hong Kong Tourism Board is focusing on Gen-Z and Millennials, as well as the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) segment, to drive this growth. Japan Airlines Expands Flights to Bangalore Japan Airlines is increasing the frequency of flights between Tokyo and Bangalore from three to five weekly flights starting in October, responding to rising demand. Bangalore remains the only airport in South India with direct connectivity to Tokyo, with Japan Airlines being the sole operator on this route. Thomas Cook’s New Customer Service App Thomas Cook India and SOTC Travel have launched a new customer self-service (CSS) holiday app, offering a comprehensive post-booking experience. The app provides customers with access to their sightseeing schedules, hotel reservations, flight tickets, insurance details, visa status, and weather updates. This launch follows the company’s introduction of an AI-powered platform to streamline holiday planning and bookings. Air India Adds Flights for Festival Season In response to increased demand during the upcoming Durga Puja festivities, Air India has announced additional flights from Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Hyderabad to Kolkata. These additional flights will continue through October, catering to the surge in travel during the festival season.

‘World’s oldest calendar’ discovered carved into 12000-year-old monument

Göbekli Tepe, an ancient archaeological site in southern Turkey, has long fascinated researchers due to its significance as one of the earliest known human settlements. The Mesopotamian site is approximately 12,000 years old, dating back to the start of the Holocene, the current epoch that began after the glaciers retreated. Recently, new interpretations of its carvings have sparked debate about whether the site also records an ancient comet strike that may have occurred nearly 13,000 years ago. This potential event, if true, would be etched into what could be the world’s oldest lunisolar calendar, providing a glimpse into the astronomical knowledge of ancient people. For those with an interest in archaeology and ancient history, Göbekli Tepe offers a unique window into early human civilisation. Visiting the site allows one to explore the mysterious stone pillars, which not only showcase remarkable prehistoric artistry, but may also hold clues to our ancestors’ understanding of the cosmos. Read on to know if this site is the world's oldest calendar. The theory, led by Martin Sweatman from the University of Edinburgh, suggests that carvings on a stone pillar at Göbekli Tepe depict a comet strike around 10,850 BCE. This event, often referred to as the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, posits that a comet or its fragments struck Earth, causing a sudden and significant climate cooling. This theory has been both supported and contested in the scientific community since it was first proposed in a 2007 study by nuclear physicist Richard Firestone. Sweatman’s team reinterpreted the V-shaped symbols found on several pillars at Göbekli Tepe, proposing that these marks represent days, effectively making up a 365-day solar calendar. They argue that the ancient people of this region may have used these carvings to track the sun's movements and record significant astronomical events, such as a comet strike. The idea that Göbekli Tepe could be an ancient astronomical calendar has intrigued some researchers, particularly the potential connection between the V-shaped carvings and the solar year. However, the comet strike hypothesis remains controversial. Critics argue that there is no definitive crater linked to the supposed impact, and some believe that the cooling period associated with the Younger Dryas could have other explanations unrelated to a comet. Despite these challenges, Sweatman’s team draws parallels between the Göbekli Tepe carvings and other ancient artifacts, such as the Nebra sky disk found in Germany. The disk, dating back to the second millennium BCE, also features symbols that some believe represent celestial events, possibly including a comet.
