600-year old doorway to Shakespeare’s dressing room discovered in Norfolk!

As per the latest news reports, the oldest working theatre in the United Kingdom believes that it has found a 600-year-old doorway that may once have led to William Shakespeare's dressing room. The discovery was made in St George's Guildhall in King's Lynn, Norfolk, when floorboards were found, and believed to have formed part of a stage once trodden by the Bard. Now, further archaeological investigations at the theatre have unveiled an even more astonishing find. The theatre's earliest recorded performances date back to 1445, long before the birth of Shakespeare, who was baptised in 1564 and passed away in 1616. This theatre has an unmatched history of dramatic performance, earning it the title of the oldest working theatre. It is the only theatre in the world with documented performances spanning the 1400s, 1500s, 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, 1900s, and still actively operating today. "It's mind-boggling," said Tim FitzHigham, the creative director of St George's Guildhall. Behind a wall of plasterboard and 18th century bricks, the team uncovered an archway dating back to before 1405 - the year the hall's mediaeval roof was built. This archway has got to be pre-1405, FitzHigham explained, further stating that they believe it was the door to what was originally the Guild Robing Room, used by the highest-ranking guild members before their feasts upstairs. However, as the guilds fell out of use, the room likely became a tiring house, which indicates a dressing room for visiting actors. In Shakespeare's time, the Guildhall was used extensively by touring theatre companies, including Queen Elizabeth's Men, who performed there 10 times in the late 1500s. "We've got a door that would definitely have been here when we think Shakespeare played here," said FitzHigham. In all likelihood, this was the door to a room where the players changed and stored their props, he stated. Archaeologist Dr. Jonathan Clarke, who collaborated on the project, agrees. This 15th century doorway appears to have provided access to a medium-sized, low-status room - the kind of private space where travelling players might change before going on stage, he said. The discovery adds to the growing evidence that St George's Guildhall, the largest intact mediaeval guildhall in England, holds deep connections to Shakespeare. Last year, the theatre identified floorboards believed to have been part of a stage the Bard himself may have trodden. Now, with the unearthing of this remarkable 600-year-old archway, the theatre's ties to Shakespeare's history have grown even stronger. "A slight hunch or weird shape in the wall has turned out to be something frankly extraordinary," marvelled FitzHigham. It's another mind-boggling discovery at the Guildhall, he added.
