Scientists discover 40-million-year-old river system hidden beneath Antarctic ice!

Planning a trip to the tip of the Earth? Now there's yet another reason to do so! Geologists have made a remarkable discovery deep beneath the ice sheets of West Antarctica - the remains of a massive ancient river system that once flowed for nearly 1,000 miles across the frozen continent. The river, which existed during the mid-to-late Eocene epoch around 30-40 million years ago, provides valuable clues about Antarctica's dramatic climate transformation. At that time, the Earth was experiencing very different atmospheric conditions, with carbon dioxide levels nearly double what they are today. This greenhouse gas-fueled warmth allowed a temperate rainforest to thrive where a frozen desert now lies. The discovery was made by a team led by sedimentologist Johann Klages of the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. In 2017, Klages and his colleagues drilled deep into the seafloor beneath the western Antarctic ice sheet, retrieving sediment cores that held a remarkable record of the region's ancient past. If reports are to go by, the lower portion of these cores contained fossils, pollen, and spores indicating a lush, temperate environment during the mid-Cretaceous period around 85 million years ago. But the upper layers, dating to the Eocene epoch, told an even more remarkable story. Here the researchers found a distinct, finely layered pattern in the sediments - exactly the kind of stratigraphy one would expect to see in an ancient river delta. Further analysis confirmed the presence of molecules unique to freshwater cyanobacteria, leaving little doubt that a massive river system had once flowed across the region. By tracing the origin of the sediments, the team was able to map the river's course, which they estimate stretched nearly 930 miles (1,500 km) from the Transantarctic Mountains to the Amundsen Sea. This discovery offers a rare glimpse into Antarctica's distant past, before it was encased in kilometres of ice. It also highlights the dramatic climate shifts the continent has endured - from lush, temperate conditions to the frozen desert of today. As concerning as this may be, the researchers say the findings could also provide valuable insights to help predict how climate change may impact the continent in the future. After all, the Eocene epoch saw CO2 levels similar to what climate models predict for the next century or two if emissions continue unabated. "This is exciting - just having this exciting image in your brain that there was this gigantic river system flowing through Antarctica that is now covered by kilometres of ice," said Klages. The team plans to continue analysing the ancient sediments, hoping to better understand how such a radical climate transformation unfolded - and what that might mean for Antarctica's future.

One such development was the miniature golf course designed to attract visitors to the dunes. However, by the 1980s, the relentless movement of the sands had entirely engulfed the course. The developers eventually abandoned their efforts and sold the land to the state of North Carolina. With the castle hole now uncovered, many are curious about the fate of the rest of the golf course. Historical photos from the Library of Congress reveal that the course once featured holes structured around a giant sea monster, a ship, a giant octopus, and a cobra. The current whereabouts of these structures remain unknown, leaving their discovery to the whims of nature and time. The natural shifting sands of Jockey's Ridge continue to shape and reshape the landscape, hinting at the hidden treasures that may still lie beneath. As these dunes, believed to be thousands of years old, continue their slow dance with the elements, they may one day reveal more secrets from the past, much like the mysterious castle of 2024.

Saudi announces multiple visa options for Indians

Saudi beckons Indian travellers with an array of tourist visa options, introducing easier access to its diverse destinations. With stopover visa, eVisa services and visa-on-arrival*Saudi extends an invitation to explore Riyadh’s vibrant cityscape, Jeddah’s cultural richness, hidden treasures of the Red Sea, and the ancient marvels of AlUla. The new guidelines and visa options cater to a variety of travel needs, encouraging more travellers to explore the multi-faceted country. Currently, there are 10 visa facilitation centres in Mumbai, Delhi, Cochin, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kolkata and Calicut with plans to add more dedicated centres in additional cities. This is in line with the Saudi Vision 2030, with a goal to tap into India’s potential as the number 1 source market by aiming to welcome 7.5 million Indian travellers by 2030. By the end of 2024 Saudi is aiming to double visitor numbers to 2.2 million. Indian travellers can now apply for a Stopover visa, which is valid for up to 96 hours and can be obtained 90 days in advance at the Saudia airline website for a nominal fee towards administration and insurance services. Indians holding a valid tourist or business visa from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, or any Schengen country, with stamped proof of entry are eligible for the eVisa. Permanent residents of these countries or individuals possessing a valid residence visa from a GCC country with a minimum validity of three months beyond the entry date into Saudi are also eligible. The eVisa can be obtained before departure through the official portal. Visa-on-arrival Travellers meeting similar criteria of a valid tourist or business visa from the US, UK, or Schengen countries with entry stamps can avail a visa upon arrival at Saudi international airports as well. Those with permanent residency in these countries can also apply at self-service kiosks or passport control offices at Saudi airports. Those not eligible under the above-mentioned criteria can apply for the visa through Tasheer Centres across India. The process encompasses document preparation, appointment booking, application submission, biometric enrolment, and passport collection. All of these visa options are valid for those wishing to perform Umrah.
