Germany: Travellers advised to avoid Hamburg airport, flights cancelled

German police advised travellers on Sunday not to use Hamburg airport due to a developing hostage situation. The airport in the northern part of the city has been closed to passengers and flights cancelled since Saturday night when an armed man broke through an airport gate with his vehicle and fired twice into the air with a weapon, according to German news agency dpa. Authorities also said the man's wife had previously contacted them about a child abduction. Police said the 35-year-old man had his 4-year-old daughter inside the car whom he had reportedly taken by force from the mother in a possible custody battle. A psychologist has been negotiating with the man for hours and there was no indication other people could be harmed since all passengers had evacuated the airport, police said.

AD Ports Group has announced the official start of the 2023-2024 cruise season with the arrival of the cruise ship "Crystal Symphony" docking at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal in Zayed Port. This upcoming cruise season promises significant growth with Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal slated for 126 calls, starting on 1st November. Additionally, Sir Bani Yas Cruise Beach is set to host 63 calls, having welcomed the first on October 31. Notably, nine of these calls will be maiden voyages, signalling ships making their inaugural visit to Abu Dhabi. Noura Rashed Al Dhaheri, Chief Executive Officer of Cruise Business, AD Ports Group, said, "We are excited to announce the official start of cruise season here in Abu Dhabi with the arrival of Crystal Symphony. The first quarter of 2023 was particularly strong with 363,494 visitors and 120 calls recorded compared to Q1 of 2022, which saw 89,953 visitors and 60 calls. Passenger volumes for Q1 2023 surpassed the number of visitors accommodated for the full year of 2022 by more than 37 per cent. Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal was launched in December 2015, providing a well-located base for cruise-liner passengers, enabling them to explore and experience the UAE capital. The Cruise Terminal is furnished with restaurants, retail outlets, duty-free shops, Etihad Airline check-in, and baggage storage.

Lufthansa adds direct flights betwee Bengaluru and Munich

With a thrice-weekly frequency arriving the same day at 8:05 in Munich, Lufthansa guest would be able to experience one of the modern and fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft, the Airbus A350-900. As with all services to India, local cuisine and catering will be offered to passengers onboard their direct service from India’s Garden City to Munich. Starting November 4, Lufthansa will operate direct flights between Bengaluru and Munich, capital of Bavaria. This makes Bengaluru the third Indian city with a direct connection for travellers via Lufthansa, besides Delhi and Mumbai. “It is an incredibly exciting time to be in India right now,” said Jeffrey James, Lufthansa Group Head of Communications - Asia Pacific, making the announcement. “Having recently overtaken China as the most populous country in the world, India has also witnessed tremendous economic growth. It is now the 5th largest economy on the planet (replacing the United Kingdom) and is on track to be the 3rd largest economy by 2030. We have been invested in India for more than 90 years and when looking for our first new APAC destination since the pandemic, Bengaluru was a natural fit,” he said. Air India embarks on major network expansion & interline agreement with Alaska Airlines

Air India plans plan to increase its weekly flights significantly by adding over 400 flights to both domestic and international routes by March 2024. On the international front, over 80 weekly flights have already been added as part of this expansion effort. Additionally, the airline is preparing to unveil four new international destinations in the coming months. Tata Group-owned Air India is set to make significant strides in its operations, both by expanding its route network and forming a crucial interline partnership with Alaska Airlines. These moves are poised to bring enhanced connectivity and convenience for travellers. The airline has announced its ambitious plan to increase its weekly flights significantly by adding over 400 flights to both domestic and international routes by March 2024. With more than 200 weekly flights planned for Indian cities such as Mumbai and Delhi, Air India is committed to strengthening its domestic network. On the international front, over 80 weekly flights have already been added as part of this expansion effort. Additionally, the airline is preparing to unveil four new international destinations in the coming months. To kickstart this expansion, Air India has already boosted weekly flight frequencies on eight international routes, touching key destinations in Southeast Asia, the United States, and Europe. This includes routes such as Mumbai-Singapore, Delhi-Bangkok, Delhi-Dhaka, and many more. In line with these expansion plans, Air India expects to induct more than 30 widebody and narrowbody aircraft into its fleet by March 2024, featuring A350s, B777s, and A320neos. Interline partnership with Alaska Airlines Simultaneously, Air India has entered into a strategic interline partnership with Alaska Airlines, strengthening its international reach with connections to and from 32 destinations in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The scope of this agreement encompasses bilateral interlining, allowing both airlines to sell tickets on each other's networks, and a Special Prorate Agreement enabling 'through fares' on Alaska Airlines routes. IndiGo logs ₹189 cr profit in Sep qtr on air travel

New Delhi: InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, which runs India’s largest IndiGo airline, clocked a net profit of ₹188.9 crore in the September quarter as air travel picked up, against a loss of ₹1,583 crore a year earlier. Total income during the period rose 20.6% from a year earlier to ₹15,503 crore, in what is typically a weak quarter for the travel industry. In fact, since IndiGo went public in November 2015, it has recorded a net profit in the quarter only twice—in 2016 and 2017. Though its performance beat estimates, IndiGo said it expects a severe capacity shortage in 2024 due to issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, which power its A320 neo and A321 neo aircraft. In July, P&W said it needs to inspect 1,200 engines worldwide to assess an issue around the metal used in manufacturing the parts of a PW-1100G engine. IndiGo operates 150 of these aircraft, though it is not clear how many of them will be affected. “Our current estimate is these accelerated inspections, and incremental shop visits will further adversely impact our operating fleet from Q4 onwards, which is 1 January 2024, and will lead to a higher number of groundings. The number of aircraft (to be impacted) is not known, but the duration could range between 250-300 days for inspection to be carried out for all the engines that are going to be recalled," chief financial officer Gaurav Negi told analysts in a post-earnings conference call. The airline, which has already grounded 40 aircraft due to earlier issues in P&W engines, is working to cover the capacity shortage. It has already retained 14 A320ceos (current engine option) in its fleet, extended leases, re-inducted 36 aircraft and executed damp leases of two aircraft on the Istanbul route. It has also implemented damp leases on another 11 aircraft, which will start flying this month. It is also signing leases for 12 more A320ceos from the secondary market, with deliveries expected from January 2024.
