IATA Launches New Digital Baggage System for Global Airlines
For decades, the aviation sector has relied on Type B messaging, a traditional teletype-based communication method used to exchange baggage-related operational data. Although this system has remained dependable, it has become increasingly outdated in a fast-moving digital environment that demands real-time data exchange, higher accuracy, and seamless interoperability. The growing complexity of global air travel has highlighted the limitations of fragmented messaging systems, particularly when managing disruptions, transfers, and high passenger volumes.
BCS has been developed as a transitional solution to bridge this technological gap. Rather than forcing a sudden global shift to new standards, the system enables both BIX-enabled platforms and legacy Type B messaging to operate together within a unified environment. This allows airlines, airports, and ground service providers to adopt modern tools at their own pace while maintaining uninterrupted communication with partners who are still using older systems.
