Air India Cuts Nearly 22% of Weekly Domestic Flights Amid Rising Costs and Operational Challenges
Air India has announced a temporary rationalisation of domestic flights between June and August 2026, cutting close to one-fifth of services as a strategic response to soaring aviation fuel costs and operational pressures stemming from ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The move aims to stabilise network operations, optimise aircraft utilisation, and minimise disruptions for passengers while the airline navigates rising costs and airspace challenges. By adjusting frequencies on select routes, Air India seeks to maintain service reliability and financial sustainability in an unpredictable aviation environment, ensuring that capacity aligns with demand during a turbulent period for the global airline industry.
Air India has confirmed a significant temporary restructuring of its domestic flight schedule between June and August 2026 in response to sustained financial strain driven by persistently high fuel costs and ongoing operational challenges tied to continued geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The airline, which already adjusted its international network earlier this year, is now extending rationalisation measures to select domestic routes as part of efforts to maintain operational stability and protect financial sustainability amid a volatile aviation environment. This latest adjustment represents a substantial reduction in service levels, with approximately one‑fifth of domestic flights impacted during the peak summer months as the carrier adapts its network to market realities. The decision follows an earlier round of international capacity cuts amounting to roughly a quarter of scheduled overseas services, reflecting the broader stress that escalating aviation fuel prices and airspace constraints have placed on global airline operations.
