Jamaica's Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett strengthens agri-tourism linkages

KINGSTON, JAMAICA - Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett announced that his Ministry donated communication equipment, valued at approximately J$1.5 million, to assist farmers affected by the now-dormant tourism sector, which was their primary market. Farmers, who supply the tourism industry, have been severely impacted by the closure of hotels and attractions as well as the downturn in businesses from restaurants, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The equipment, which included six laptops and six mobile phones, was donated to the staff of the Agri-Linkages Exchange Project (ALEX), who typically communicate directly with farmers to facilitate the distribution of their produce to the tourism sector. The donation will allow the six members of staff to work from home and find new distribution channels for the produce. Speaking at a digital press briefing hosted at the Ministry of Tourism’s Kingston office earlier today, the Tourism Minister said, “One of our biggest partners in the tourism industry is agriculture. We know at this time the hotels are closed but hopefully for a short time. However, the need for the ALEX app is more critical now because small farmers, who have been producing for the industry, would now have an excess in produce and would need an opportunity to connect with other entities, so they know what you have, where you have it and the cost.” With the closure of the hotels, the Centre, which is housed at RADA’s St Andrew office, will be focused on selling the produce to restaurants and supermarkets. State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Floyd Green, welcomed the donation sharing that it would help reduce the large amount of excess produce, which may be wasted. “For the month of March, due to the downturn in tourism, we have approximately 9000 tonnes of produce that would normally go into the tourism sector that are now an excess. We are talking about billions of dollars that would have been taken up by the tourism sector, that have no place to go. But every challenge presents an opportunity and we want to thank the Ministry of Tourism for recognising that even in this time of difficulty, we can innovate and strengthen the things we do,” said Minister Green. He added that members of the public are being encouraged to utilise the platform to purchase fresh produce in smaller quantities and support the farmers. “If the general public is wondering how they can get access to this excess produce that we have, they can visit agrilinkages.gov.jm. The site used to be for big orders but the platform is so configured that you can order even two pounds of tomatoes. Now that the team is working from home, they can call the farmers and get them to deliver right to your gate,” he said. The Agri-Linkages Exchange Project (ALEX) is a joint agreement with the Ministry of Tourism, through the Tourism Linkages Network, and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture & Fisheries (MICAF), through the Rural Agricultural Authority (RADA). It was developed in 2017 to establish a bridge between sellers (farmers) and buyers (tourism stakeholders) to facilitate the exchange of goods. Through this exchange centre, farmers have had access to a physical space dedicated to calling or emailing about the produce they have available to supply the tourism sector. The Centre then markets this information to the hospitality sector and provides support to other key agricultural stakeholders. There are currently over four hundred farmers registered on the platform.

SG travel companies diversify for survival

The current economic climate may present the least attractive time to launch new businesses, especially in the travel and tourism space, but two tourism companies in Singapore have chosen to dive into new areas of specialisation. Outbound tour specialist EU Holidays is now developing an inbound arm in response to a rising trend for city tours and staycations, according to director Wong Yew Hoong. He revealed plans to promote inbound tours and hotel stays to locals, relying on short videos highlighting local attractions on social media to reach out to potential customers. The company will also be putting up travel merchandise for sale to support operational costs at its premises. Also embracing a new business concept is James Yeow, chairman, OMT group of companies. He described this period as “opportune” in growing travel club Blockchain in Travel by OMT – a strategic partnership inked between the group and China blockchain data sharing platform Changyou Travel Alliance. Members use Changyou Travel Coin – a cryptocurrency – to pay for travel packages, as well as a variety of local and overseas merchant products and services that the group is growing. With the absence of third-party intermediaries, Yeow shared travellers can expect a reduction of 15 to 25 per cent in travel costs, delivering “a win-win situation for both consumer and business.” “Blockchain technology will revolutionise the travel industry, as decentralising the booking marketplace allows service providers to connect with customers directly and they (customers) stand to gain from the transparent nature of prices and potential fees, creating a better experience,” Yeow explained.

Emirates to get financial aid from Dubai govt, as airlines struggle globally

Dubai has promised financial assistance for state-owned carrier Emirates as various international airlines look for government bailouts amid the corona virus pandemic. The government will inject new equity into the carrier, one of the world’s leading long-haul airlines, during this “critical period”, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the crown prince, said in a statement, according a Financial Times report. Dubai is the latest government to intervene in the sector reeling from the coronavirus pandemic. The global airline industry will burn through $61bn of their cash reserves during the second quarter of this year, according to the latest forecast from its trade body. IATA, the industry trade body, on Tuesday warned carriers are facing an “enormous cash problem” and face a net loss of $39bn in the three months to end of June. The cash outlook comes just a week after IATA warned the pandemic would slash airline revenues by $250bn this year. Governments around the world have been launching rescue packages for the aviation industry, including a US stimulus bill that earmarked $58bn in loans and guarantees for US airlines. Singapore has put together a $13bn rescue package for its national carrier. Regional rival Qatar Airways has also said its cash reserves are running low and it would soon have to approach its government shareholder for assistance. Sheikh Hamdan said Emirates was of strategic importance to the economies of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, playing “a key role in positioning Dubai as a major international aviation hub”. Similar to other airlines, Emirates has been hit hard by global travel restrictions and reduced demand. Scheduled passenger flights were suspended last week from its home base at Dubai airport, which is usually the world’s busiest in terms of international passenger traffic. The airline has grounded much of its fleet, placed employees on unpaid leave and cut the salaries of its 105,000 workforce by up to a half, Financial Times reported.

Foreign tourists' queries flood 'Stranded in India' portal

The Ministry of Tourism has received over 500 requests from foreign tourists on its 'Stranded in India' portal which it launched on March 31, the ministry said in a statement. A majority of queries have been about information on travelling back to their home countries or for extension of their visas to stay in India due to their inability to return home in the wake of the nationwide coronavirus-induced lockdown. The foreign tourists stuck in small towns and rural areas in India have also sought information on how to reach metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai from where they can take flights back to their own countries once the lockdown is over, the ministry said. The ministry said it is also providing assistance to tourists and addressing their queries in coordination with and support of the Ministry of External Affairs and state officials. The tourism ministry has also been coordinating with embassies regarding problems faced by foreign tourists. "A majority of the requests received from foreign tourists are about seeking information for travelling back to their home countries and also looking at extension of the visas to stay in India while they cannot travel back. "The other issue being faced by tourists travelling within India is reaching metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai from where flights can be taken out of India once lockdown gets lifted," it said. The Tourism Ministry said that it is working actively with state officials to provide a solution for problems being faced by foreign tourists while emergency requests like the need for food, medicine and care for elderly tourists are being expedited. The Hotels and Restaurant Division of the Tourism Ministry has been in constant touch with several hotels which are accommodating guests during the lockdown and coordinating with the embassies regarding problems faced by the guests if any. Hotels are being requested to follow protocol and extend their support till the departure of such guests are arranged by the embassies, the ministry said. The ministry has set up a task force comprising of its officials, both at the central and regional levels and representatives of the state tourism departments, to address the issues being brought forward in real-time. The coordination group is working through WhatsApp, emails and telephones to ensure smooth information flow and speedy redressal of issues.
