The Bahamas tourism to set new records in 2024: A look at ‘Fuel-Free’ travel

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation (BMOTIA) has exceeded all expectations in 2023 and is on track to set new records for 2024. This remarkable performance will be highlighted at the upcoming State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC), set to take place from September 2–6 at the Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa. SOTIC is a prestigious event that gathers regional and global experts, visionaries, and decision-makers to shape strategies that ensure the region’s continued competitive edge and sustainable growth in the tourism sector. The Bahamas has seen an impressive surge in visitor arrivals, with both cruise and land-based stays contributing to its growth. This upward trajectory reinforces the island nation’s status as a top global travel destination, drawing millions of visitors from around the world. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, Hon. I. Chester Cooper, stated, “To drive continued growth in both new and repeat visits, we have implemented a strategy tailored to the evolving expectations of today’s travelers.” He highlighted the expansion of direct flights from major U.S. markets to Nassau and other Bahamian destinations, the ongoing development of cruise ports, and the beautification of downtown areas as key factors solidifying The Bahamas’ position as a leading tourist destination. Latia Duncombe, Director General of BMOTIA, emphasized the importance of innovation, collaboration, and commitment in the country’s success. “Our success is built on a foundation of innovation, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to continually enhancing our diverse tourism offerings, ensuring that visitors are eager to return,” Duncombe said. She also noted that SOTIC provides a valuable platform for sharing insights and forging partnerships that will drive regional strategies for sustained success in the global market. In 2023, The Bahamas experienced record-breaking tourism growth, welcoming nearly 10 million visitors, a 38% increase from 2022 and a 33% rise compared to 2019. Foreign air arrivals surged by 17% to reach a record 1.7 million, while sea arrivals skyrocketed by 43.5% to 7.9 million. This trend has continued into 2024, with a 14% increase in foreign air and sea arrivals from January to June, translating to over 5.7 million visitors in just six months. Looking ahead, The Bahamas is poised for further growth with several exciting developments on the horizon: Carnival Cruise Line at Celebration Key on Grand Bahama Island will introduce Pearl Cove Beach Club, an adults-only area set to open in July 2025. Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and ITM Group are collaborating on a new cruise port and water park on Grand Bahama Island. Major air support from leading carriers, including Delta, American, Southwest and regional airlines like Tradewind and Tropic Airways, has led to new flights from key U.S. cities such as New York, Orlando, Los Angeles, and Miami. The luxury resort landscape continues to expand with the upcoming Four Seasons-branded condo-hotel on Paradise Island, Six Senses Grand Bahama in 2026, Rosewood Exuma in 2028, and the reopening of Eleuthera’s iconic Potlatch Club. As The Bahamas continues to break tourism records, it is not only meeting the needs of today’s travelers but also shaping the future of global tourism.

This special visa, once approved, will grant entry to 6 Southeast Asian countries

As reported earlier, in a bid to attract more long-haul tourists, Thailand proposed the introduction of a Schengen-style visa scheme. According to reports, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin also held discussions with the representatives of Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam to advance this initiative. If reports are to go by, in 2023 alone, Thailand welcomed 28 million tourists, highlighting the effectiveness of such policies. The proposed visa system aims to replicate seamless travel experience found in Europe’s Schengen Area, making travel across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam more accessible and efficient. This collaborative effort is strategically designed to boost tourism and strengthen economic ties within the region. If approved, travellers won’t need additional visas or permits. Modelled after Europe’s Schengen Area, the unified visa system would allow tourists to travel freely among the participating countries. This initiative is part of Thailand’s ambitious goal to attract 80 million tourists annually by 2027. The Schengen-style visa proposal holds significant potential to enhance Thailand’s economy, as tourism is a crucial sector that contributes approximately 12 percent to the country’s GDP and provides about 20 percent of its jobs. Thailand’s well-developed tourism infrastructure, including its thriving wellness industry, positions it to benefit significantly from the expected increase in tourist arrivals. The visa initiative could make these wellness experiences more accessible and help Thailand tap into the growing global wellness tourism market. However, despite its potential economic benefits, the proposal raises concerns about feasibility, overtourism, and inflation. There are also broader questions about regional integration and mobility, including whether the visa scheme could eventually lead to greater freedom for ASEAN citizens to work, study, or reside across national borders. While the Schengen-style visa could enhance travel convenience, it also risks exacerbating overtourism, which could harm Thailand’s long-term tourism sustainability. However, it’s pertinent to note that Thailand's ambitious drive to implement a joint-visa program across several Southeast Asian nations is expected to have a limited impact on Indian travellers. This is primarily due to the existing privileges that Indian citizens already enjoy when visiting these countries. Currently, Indians benefit from visa exemptions, visa-on-arrival facilities, and convenient e-visa options in these countries, which allow for relatively hassle-free entry. These existing visa arrangements provide Indian tourists with a high level of accessibility and flexibility, reducing the need for significant changes under the proposed joint-visa system.
