Goa: Increase direct international flights and improve air connectivity from the major Indian cities

Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has urged the Central government to bolster the state’s tourism sector. He emphasized on increasing direct international flights and improving air connectivity from major Indian cities. In a meeting with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on Thursday, Khaunte emphasized the need for enhanced international connectivity to attract a larger influx of foreign tourists. The state is also seeking expedited implementation of the Central government’s PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) scheme for the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The tourism department believes this would significantly boost the state’s spiritual and cultural appeal, especially in light of the upcoming exposition of St Francis Xavier’s relics. Aligning the PRASHAD scheme with the exposition will enrich the overall tourism experience in Goa, said a senior tourism department official. Khaunte also requested central support for improving Goa’s tourism infrastructure and promoting the state globally. Mumbai-Pune Train Travel Time To Reduce By 20-30 Minutes

In a good news for commuters between Pune and Mumbai, train travel time is expected to reduce by 20-30 minutes soon. According to a report by the Indian Express, Central Railway is surveying to plan a lower-gradient alternative rail route to the current Pune-Mumbai connection through the steep Bhor Ghat. “The survey began about five months ago. It’s an extensive survey aimed at determining alternate routes that will make the ghat section alignment less steep. The current alignment between Mumbai and Pune in the ghat section has a steep gradient of 1.37. The aim of the project is to reduce the gradient to 1.100,” said Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway. Neela mentioned that the reduced gradient will decrease the need for banker locomotives when manoeuvring trains through the ghat’s steep slopes. “Passenger trains may no longer require banker locomotives due to the reduced slope. They might still be needed for goods trains," he added. According to Neela, the new route will be longer than the current alignment but won’t require additional engine strength to manoeuvre trains. He added that it may still result in shorter travel times compared to the current route.

According to Wego’s data from January to June 2024, searches for international flights to India experienced a 40.71% year-over-year increase. The growth in international flight searches to India on Wego has been consistent over the past few years, with this year’s inbound flight searches surpassing even pre-pandemic levels from the same period in 2019. The platform’s data for the first half of 2024 indicates significant travel interest to India from various regions, particularly the GCC countries. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman were the top five sources of travelers, underscoring the strong cultural and economic ties between India and these Gulf nations. In addition to the GCC countries, Bahrain also demonstrated substantial travel interest, reflecting its active travel connections with India. The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Thailand were also among the top ten countries of origin for travelers to India. Bernard Corraya, General Manager of Wego India office, said: “The findings suggest a dynamic travel landscape where India remains a key destination for both leisure and business travelers from across the globe, driven by various factors such as tourism, business ventures, and familial connections.” Wego reported a notable spike in flight searches to India during April and June 2024, coinciding with the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. These festive periods often see travelers from the Middle East taking advantage of extended holidays to visit family, explore new places, or embark on religious pilgrimages. This increase in international interest in India presents a significant opportunity for Indian travel companies. Hotels, tour operators, and local experience providers can now connect with a broader international audience eager to experience India’s unique culture. Chhattisgarh to get new tiger reserve amid declining tiger population

In response to decline in tiger population, Chhattisgarh has officially approved the creation of a new tiger reserve, marking a significant step in the state's wildlife conservation efforts. Announced recently, the Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve will be the third largest in India, spanning an impressive 2,829 sq km across four northern districts of the state. This move comes after the Chhattisgarh High Court intervened on July 15, granting the state government four weeks to address the proposal of declaring the area a tiger reserve. The urgency of this decision is in line with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), which revealed a dramatic drop in Chhattisgarh’s tiger population from 46 in 2014 to just 17 in 2022. The newly designated Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve integrates the Guru Ghasidas National Park and the Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the districts of Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, Koriya, Surajpur, and Balrampur. This expansion aims to bolster tiger conservation efforts by creating a contiguous habitat that supports the survival and proliferation of these big cats. India's largest tiger reserve, the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve in Andhra Pradesh, covers 3,296.31 sq km, while the Manas Tiger Reserve in Assam ranks second, spanning 2,837.1 sq km. Both reserves are home to 58 tigers each.
