Iceland's popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa reopens for tourists as volcano activity subsides
- Jun 04,2024
- Hindustan Times
The popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, one of Iceland’s biggest tourist attractions in the country's southwest, was reopened Sunday after authorities said a nearby volcano had stabilized after erupting four days earlier. Oddný Arnarsdóttir, the head of Visit Iceland, said authorities had redone the security zones in the area and based on that the lagoon was safe to reopen for tourists. “Blue Lagoon opened again today," she said. Hundreds of tourists bathed in the lagoon, with the view of the erupting crater in the background. Cameron and Natalie Pacileo, tourists from North Carolina, said they were delighted to see the volcano from the lagoon. “It’s pretty wild. It’s a beautiful view, and nice that they reopened so we can experience it," said Natalie Pacileo. The eruption Wednesday was the fifth and most powerful since the volcanic system reawakened in December after 800 years, gushing record levels of lava as its fissure grew to 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) in length. The activity last week once again threatened Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people, and led to the evacuation of the geothermal spa. Grindavik, which is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, has been threatened since a swarm of earthquakes in November forced an evacuation in advance of the initial Dec. 18 eruption. A subsequent eruption consumed several buildings. Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, sees regular eruptions. The most disruptive in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed huge clouds of ash into the atmosphere and led to widespread airspace closures over Europe.

Germany launches new ‘Opportunity Card’ visa system.
- Jun 04,2024
- Times Of India
As per the latest reports, Germany has implemented significant alterations to its skilled worker visa regulations in response to the increasing demand for proficient professionals in critical sectors like engineering, information technology (IT), and healthcare. The nation, which faces the requirement of approximately 400,000 skilled workers to fill the labour void in specialised domains, has introduced a novel initiative called the 'Opportunity Card', as per the reports. The new visa system commenced June 1, 2024. Known as the Opportunity Card program, it allows non-European Union (EU) citizens to move to Germany for a year to explore employment opportunities. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to address the shortage of skilled labour in engineering, IT, and healthcare industries. To qualify for the Opportunity Card, applicants must have completed at least two years of vocational training or possess a relevant university degree from their home country. Proficiency in either German or English is mandatory. Additionally, candidates must exhibit sufficient financial resources, including income from part-time employment, to support themselves in Germany for a year, totaling over 12,000 Euros. If reports are to go by, the initial duration of the residence permit has been extended to 24 months for first-time recipients, compared to the previous 18 months granted for completing adaptation measures. Furthermore, this permit can be extended for an additional 12 months, resulting in a maximum residency period of three years. Moreover, the allowance for secondary employment during the qualification process has been raised from 10 to 20 hours per week, facilitating easier access for aspiring skilled workers to enter the job market. Germany has also gone ahead to simplify the process for recognising foreign qualifications under the new Skilled Immigration Act, introducing two new pathways. Individuals whose qualifications necessitate a skills analysis to ascertain equivalence may obtain a residence permit for up to six months to complete this assessment. Applicants pursuing this pathway must demonstrate proficiency in the German language at level A2 or higher (CEFR). In an effort to streamline the immigration process for family members accompanying skilled workers, Germany has also abolished the requirement for spouses or minor children to provide evidence of sufficient living space when relocating to join certain skilled professionals in the country. This adjustment aims to facilitate a smoother transition for families moving with skilled workers to Germany.

Char Dham Yatra: Offline registration starts
- Jun 04,2024
- Times Of India
Offline registrations for the revered Char Dham yatra has already started to facilitate the travel of pilgrims. If you also want to register yourself offline for the yatra, you can do so in the sacred towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh. The resumption of offline registration comes as a pivotal development, following its suspension a few days back due to concerns over congestion and grievances of mismanagement voiced by pilgrims, who encountered various challenges with the process. Addressing the matter, Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey reassured pilgrims of improved arrangements at the offline registration centres in Haridwar and Rishikesh. He stressed the magnitude of pilgrim influx, revealing that a staggering 14.3 lakh devotees have already visited the sacred Char Dham yatra so far. Pandey further disclosed that approximately 25,000 backlog registrations from both centres have been meticulously addressed, instilling a sense of order and control in the registration process. Pandey also hinted at the possibility of augmenting the allotted quota at these centres, a decision contingent upon the evolving crowd dynamics and demand. In response to prior management challenges, the offline registration facility underwent a strategic relocation from the district tourism office to the more spacious and conducive environs of Rishikul Ground. This proactive measure aimed to mitigate congestion and streamline the registration process for the convenience of pilgrims embarking on this sacred journey. Echoing Pandey's sentiments, DM Haridwar Dheeraj Singh Garbyal emphasised the paramount importance of pilgrim welfare. He divulged that medical teams, equipped with ambulances, have been stationed at the offline registration centres. These dedicated teams have been tasked with conducting thorough medical checkups of pilgrims before they set foot on their spiritual odyssey, ensuring their well-being and safety throughout the arduous pilgrimage. The deployment of medical teams reflects the administration's commitment to safeguarding the health and welfare of pilgrims, and adopting the holistic approach to enhance the pilgrimage experience. These comprehensive measures also display a concerted effort to address past challenges, thereby forming an environment conducive to spiritual fulfilment and pilgrimage satisfaction. As reported earlier, more than 650 pilgrims were denied entry to Badrinath as they lacked the necessary registration. That move was in line with authorities' endeavours to regulate pilgrim traffic to the Char Dham and avert the disorder experienced earlier in the yatra season. Now, with the offline registration process in place, pilgrims will now be able to avoid unnecessary hindrances on the way.
