Germany faces travel chaos as union members go on strike again

renewed warning strikes by several professional groups. | Photo Credit: AP Millions of travellers across Germany were affected by strikes again on March 7 after two unions called for two-day walkouts over wages and work conditions. Around 80% of all long-distance trains as well as regional and commuter trains in the country were cancelled as train drivers went on strike. Air travel was affected as well, as ground staff for German airline Lufthansa stopped working early in the morning. The strikes led to traffic jams in cities and on highways, a shortage of share and rental cars, and plane passengers trying to desperately rebook flights to reach their destinations. Students arrived late for school and employees struggled to arrive on time for work as millions who usually rely on commuter trains found themselves stranded or stuck in traffic. Lufthansa said earlier in the week that about 1,000 flights per day would have to be canceled and that around 200,000 air passengers would be affected. Negotiations continue for Lufthansa ground staff and German rail operator Deutsche Bahn's train drivers. The train drivers' union GDL and Verdi called for the strikes on Thursday and Friday.

Dubai gets ‘Work Bundle’ platform to simplify visa process

As per the latest development, the UAE has launched a new platform that will reduce the processing time for completing all the necessary documents to acquire work permits and residency visas. If reports are to go by, it will significantly reduce the time frame from almost one month to just five days, thanks to the newly launched Work Bundle platform. It’s first rolled out in Dubai, which will be gradually implemented in other emirates. The integrated procedure will not only help streamline the process, but will also cut down the required documents from 16 to just five. Additionally, the number of visits to service centers has been reduced from seven to only two, as announced by officials during a press conference. Work Bundle integrates all procedures for government entities, including the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre), Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP), Dubai Health Authority (DHA), and the Department of Economy and Tourism, along with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA). Initially rolled out in Dubai, the platform is all set to be implemented in other emirates. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, highlighted that the Work Bundle platform aims to facilitate, simplify, and expedite the procedures for residency and work permits in the country. He added that the platform is expected to reclaim a lot more working days that were previously devoted to the renewal of residencies and employment contracts, resulting in substantial annual savings for both the government and private sectors. In a move to enhance efficiency, Sheikh Mohammed had previously directed UAE ministries and federal entities to reduce at least 2,000 procedures and cut the processing time by half within a year. Work Bundle aligns with the UAE's digital transformation efforts, simplifying the process of establishing and managing businesses for private companies through a consolidated platform. The initiative reduces procedures from 15 steps requiring 16 documents to just 5 steps and 5 documents. The number of visits required to government entities is also significantly reduced from 7 to only 2 visits, resulting in a notable reduction in waiting and processing time, from 30 working days to just 5 working days. For employees abroad seeking to benefit from the Work Bundle platform, the process involves filling out a unified application and obtaining a work permit for the employee. Subsequently, the employee proceeds to complete residency procedures, including a medical examination and the issuance of the Emirates ID card. In the case of renewal services, the company owner fills out the unified application, and the employee completes the medical examination and obtains the Emirates ID.

Assam to introduce ‘tourist police’ to ensure safety of tourists

As per the latest development, Assam state's tourism department has devised a plan to implement a ‘tourist police’ initiative, in a move to ensure the safety and security of visitors in Assam. If reports are to go by, this decision comes in response to a significant rise in tourist numbers in the state post-Covid last year. The new Assam Tourism (Development and Registration) Bill, 2024, have been recently passed by the state assembly, which included the ‘tourist police’ scheme. It included details of establishing units, tourist police stations, and necessary infrastructure to guarantee the well-being of visitors. Reports add that every accommodation facility will be required to register with the tourism department. Revealing more about this initiative, the official further highlighted that the scheme is in its initial stages, but will be implemented soon, and will involve inspections of tourist places to create a safe and secure environment. Several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh, have already introduced tourist police. The said official added that Assam needs to follow suit and join the majority of states in implementing this crucial safety measure. Reports add that the ‘tourist police’ scheme was introduced nationwide in 2022 when the Union Ministry of Tourism directed all states and Union territories to establish dedicated tourist police units. This collaborative effort involved the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in developing a framework, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), training programs for personnel, and uniform recommendations for tourist police officers. In 2023, Assam witnessed a surge in tourist footfall, and reported 98.31 lakh visitors, comprising 98.12 lakh domestic and 18,946 foreign tourists. This marked a substantial increase from the 2022 figures, where the state recorded a total of 17.03 lakh tourists, consisting of 17.02 lakh domestic and 1,231 foreign visitors—the highest footfall in the past decade. Notably, Kaziranga National Park attracted 9,183 foreign tourists and 3,02,763 domestic tourists in the previous year.

The Arctic could likely be ‘ice-free’ in just 10 years, warn scientists

As per the latest development, researchers have issued a stark warning that the Arctic may witness its first-ever ice-free summer within the next ten years, a development with far-reaching global consequences. A recent study from the University of Colorado Boulder projects that, even in the most optimistic scenarios for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly devoid of ice by late summer in the 2020s or 2030s, marking a decade earlier than previously estimated by models. Published in the journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, the findings are rooted in an analysis of existing climate data. It's crucial to note that ‘ice-free’ in this context doesn't denote absolute absence, but rather signifies that the Arctic Ocean would have less than 1 million sq km of ice, primarily concentrated near the coast. Nevertheless, this would still entail significant environmental ramifications. The study further predicts the likelihood of consistent ice-free Septembers, the peak summer month in the Arctic, occurring between 2035 and 2067, contingent on the efficacy of emissions reduction measures. In a worst-case scenario involving high emissions, the Arctic could experience up to nine months of ice-free conditions each year, fundamentally transforming the region's dynamics. Lead researcher Alexandra Jahn, an associate professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences and a fellow at CU Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, undertook a comprehensive analysis of sea ice projections from existing literature. The team also scrutinized sea ice coverage data from computational climate models to project the Arctic's daily changes. Their findings indicate that the first instance of sea ice coverage falling below the 1-square-kilometer threshold might occur, on average, four years earlier than monthly averages, with the potential for an 18-year variance. Jahn underscores the importance of predicting the first ice-free conditions in the Arctic, a phenomenon discernible in daily satellite data, for effective communication. Greenhouse gas emissions emerge as the primary contributors to sea ice loss in Jahn's analysis. A reduction in snow and ice cover amplifies the absorption of sunlight by the ocean, exacerbating ice melt and overall warming in the Arctic. The urgency to address these issues becomes apparent as the Arctic's ice-free future looms closer than previously thought.

Madhya Pradesh set to soar with two new upcoming airports in Guna and Shivpuri

Very soon Madhya Pradesh will have two new airports at Guna and Shivpuri. The announcement was made by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia who revealed plans for the construction of two new airports to enhance air connectivity in the region. Each of these airports will receive a funding allocation of INR 45 crore from the government. These developments are set to improve accessibility to air travel and boost regional connectivity for the residents of Guna and Shivpuri cities. Guna is slated for development under UDAN 5.2, with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) dedicating a budget of INR 45 crore for its realisation. The AAI will provide Aeronautical Information Services (AIS), Communications and Navigation Surveillance (CNS), and undertake Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services to ensure the efficient functioning of Guna Airport. Similarly, Shivpuri Airport has been identified under UDAN 5.2, with plans to accommodate nine-seater aircraft upon its operations. Spirit Air, a new startup airline, has already expressed interest in providing connectivity from Shivpuri to Bhopal. AAI will extend its role as the O&M service provider for Shivpuri Airport, in addition to its responsibilities at Guna Airport. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has allocated INR 45 crore for the development of Shivpuri Airport. These airport developments are expected to enhance regional connectivity in Madhya Pradesh, directly benefiting residents of Bhopal, Shivpuri, Guna, and neighboring areas. Beyond facilitating easier air travel, these initiatives are anticipated to stimulate tourism, trade, and commerce, consequently boosting economic activities in the region. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia noted that the construction of these twin airports was approved under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government's regional connectivity scheme, Udan. He also highlighted the historical context, mentioning that his late father and former Civil Aviation Minister, Madhavrao Scindia, had initiated Vayudoot services connecting Guna to Bhopal and Delhi.
