Trump Unveils New ‘Gold Card’ US Visa — Big Implications for Indians

United States President Donald Trump recently introduced the “Gold Card” residency permit, a new pathway to American citizenship for wealthy immigrants. If reports are to go by, this initiative is set to replace the existing EB-5 investor visa program, which has been a popular route for foreign investors seeking US permanent residency. The Gold Card program is expected to significantly alter the US immigration landscape, particularly impacting Indian applicants who previously relied on the EB-5 visa. The Gold Card visa offers a direct route to US citizenship for individuals willing to invest $5 million in the country. Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, emphasised that this visa would grant the same benefits as a Green Card, but with an expedited path to citizenship for those who can afford it.

Nepal Restarts Everest Rescue Flights After Protests Ease

Nepali airlines have resumed helicopter rescue operations in the Everest region after weeks of suspension due to protests by local communities. The flights, crucial for emergency rescues in the mountainous region, were halted after locals blocked landing sites, citing concerns over environmental impact and lost income from trekkers. Helicopters serve as a vital form of transportation here, since most of the hilly and isolated areas of Nepal don't have access to roads. However, the use of helicopters by mountaineering teams and tourists over challenging terrain in the Sagarmatha National Park, for a shortcut, has raised concern Also, although helicopters are essential for emergency evacuations, they are also commonly used to carry wealthy tourists and mountaineering teams, to avoid the difficult two-week walk to Everest Base Camp, which costs a whopping $1,000. This practice deprives local businesses and guides of a vital revenue stream that comes from trekkers spending days in villages along the traditional overland route. In early January, the Airlines Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) suspended all flights after protesters blocked landing sites with flags and warned pilots they would have to return on foot if they landed. Commercial flights to the Everest region are still restricted, but rescue flights have resumed on humanitarian grounds, according to AOAN official Pratap Jung Pandey, who made the announcement on January 27. To find a solution, local communities and aviation officials are currently negotiating.

New Zealand Expands Seasonal Work Visas

As of 8th December 2023, New Zealand will introduce two new visas — Global Workforce Seasonal Visa and Peak Seasonal Visa — which will give travelers the chance to spend time working, while also traveling, as New Zealand will provide the opportunity to stay for a long duration. This new visa policy will allow travelers to live, work, and spend time traveling in New Zealand which will provide a change to the way most travelers visit New Zealand and expand the options available to them. Combining Work and Exploration: A Game-Changer for Travelers For many travelers, the biggest draw of the new visa categories is the chance to work and explore New Zealand simultaneously. Instead of having to choose between a working holiday or a short vacation, the new GWSV and PSV offer flexibility. The GWSV, available for skilled workers, allows a stay of up to three years, while the PSV is a short-term option, lasting up to seven months. These extended stays mean travelers no longer need to rush through the country in a few weeks. Instead, they can settle into New Zealand for a season, contribute to local industries, and still have ample time to explore the country. Whether it’s a ski resort in the winter or a vineyard during harvest season, these visas allow for a deeper, more immersive experience. Packing for Work and Adventure With the opportunity to work for several months in one of New Zealand’s industries, travelers will need to pack for both work and exploration. Depending on the type of seasonal job, travelers may need practical work gear, such as sturdy boots, weatherproof jackets, and gloves for roles in agriculture, forestry, or snow sports. However, travelers should also pack light, comfortable clothing for their free time, including hiking boots and casual wear for day trips. Given New Zealand’s diverse landscapes, packing for adventure is a must. A backpack for day hikes, a camera for capturing memories, and lightweight gear for longer stays will be essential. For those working in remote areas, basic camping gear might also come in handy during exploration days. This combination of work essentials and travel gear ensures travelers are ready for both their job and the countless opportunities to explore New Zealand’s breathtaking scenery.
