Shanghai Tourism Surges Past 6 Million Visitors Fueled by Visa-Free Access

The recovery of Shanghai inbound tourism is firmly under way, with the city reaffirming its role as a global gateway. In the first nine months of the year, the city welcomed around 6.3 million inbound visitors, marking a significant year-on-year increase of approximately 37%. Overnight stays by international visitors reached roughly 7.7 million, up about 44.7%. These gains demonstrate how strategic policy moves and event-driven demand can combine to fuel growth. Policy Support and Simplified Entry Rules The upturn in Shanghai inbound tourism is in no small part down to the broad rollout of simplified entry schemes and the relaxation of visa rules. National policy has made entry more seamless, and this has encouraged international travellers to visit the city and stay overnight in greater numbers. Improved accessibility is complemented by growth in the hospitality sector: average occupancy rates for star-rated hotels climbed, with five-star properties showing especially strong gains. This hospitality sector rebound underpins the wider tourism bounce. Major Source Markets Driving Visitor Growth Among the source markets for this surge, one stands out: South Korea remained the largest contributor, with some 619,800 visitors – more than double last year’s figure. Japan and the United States followed, each with more than 450,000 and 380,000 arrivals respectively. Meanwhile, the Southeast Asian markets surged: arrivals from Thailand rose more than 100% (106.46%) and Indonesia by 61.38%. These source markets highlight how the city is drawing from a wide international catchment rather than relying on a single region.
