Thailand Eyes Tourism Comeback Amid Drop in Chinese Arrivals and Casino Debate
Thailand is making a determined push to reclaim its position as a leading global tourism destination after facing a sharp decline in Chinese visitors and ongoing controversy surrounding the legalization of casinos. In 2025, the number of Chinese tourists dropped by nearly 33%, primarily due to safety concerns following a high-profile kidnapping incident. This has significantly impacted Thailand’s tourism revenue, which relies heavily on Chinese visitors. In response, Thai officials are prioritizing diplomatic efforts, such as halting the progression of casino legalization to address concerns raised by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Alongside these measures, the country is launching targeted campaigns like “Nihao Month” to win back this crucial market, with the aim of revitalizing tourism, diversifying offerings, and strengthening its global standing despite these challenges.
Thailand’s tourism industry, a critical pillar of its economy, is grappling with the decline in Chinese tourist arrivals, prompting officials to take significant steps to recover the vital market. A recent agreement between Thai and Chinese leaders has highlighted tourism collaboration, with both parties focusing on revitalizing the sector while working to resolve any potential tensions related to Thailand’s stance on legalizing casino resorts.
In July, Chinese President Xi Jinping voiced concerns about Thailand’s plans to legalize casinos, warning of possible adverse effects on tourism and trade between the two countries. His concerns were further compounded by the risk that such a move might encourage a shift in tourist flows and undermine the strong relationship that has long existed between Thailand and China. To address these concerns, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reassured President Xi that Thailand would firmly oppose any efforts to legalize casinos, a stance reaffirmed at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea later in the year. This commitment to halt progress on casino legalization is seen as a key factor in Thailand’s efforts to maintain its appeal to Chinese travelers.
