Sri Lanka Launches New Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers
Sri Lanka has taken a bold step into the future of work and travel by launching its Digital Nomad Visa, designed for international remote workers who earn at least $2,000 per month. The new visa, now available for online applications, allows eligible applicants to live and work from this island nation for one year, with the possibility of annual renewal. This initiative aims to attract global talent, encourage extended stays, and boost tourism and economic activity.
According to the official Digital Nomad Visa category policy from the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration & Emigration, this visa category is open to foreign nationals aged 18 or older who are engaged in remote employment, freelancing, or business activities that serve clients outside Sri Lanka. The focus is on bringing long‑staying professionals to Sri Lanka without competing for local employment.
Applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly remittance of USD 2,000 to qualify. If the nomad plans to bring dependents, the income requirement increases by an additional USD 500 per month for each dependent beyond two. This ensures visitors are financially self‑sufficient during their stay in Sri Lanka.
