Thailand Taps Balkan Markets for Long-Haul Group Travel
Thailand is now joining Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, and other emerging Balkan nations in seizing the explosive growth of long-haul group travel. This strategic move aims to not only boost Thailand’s tourism sector but also to strengthen its international ties, particularly with travellers from distant markets. By capitalizing on the increasing demand for long-haul travel, Thailand is positioning itself as a prime destination for group tourists seeking unique experiences. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the country’s tourism economy, foster cultural exchange, and reinforce Thailand’s standing as a global tourism leader in the rapidly expanding long-haul market.
With increasing disposable incomes, a growing middle class seeking international travel, and an expanding high-end consumer segment, coupled with enhanced air connectivity throughout the Balkans, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is shifting its focus to emerging European markets. This shift is aimed at capturing new group business and driving long-haul demand to Thailand. The TAT is making a bold move by launching the 2026 Balkans Roadshow, an initiative designed to foster connections with the region’s travel professionals, while also promoting Thailand as a key long-haul destination.
The regional roadshow kicked off in Belgrade on February 21, where 15 Thai tourism operators were connected with 18 regional buyers. This marked the beginning of a comprehensive tour across the Balkans, which will make stops in Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, and Sofia. These key cities were strategically chosen for their growing interest in outbound travel and their ability to serve as gateways to surrounding regions. The roadshow is seen as a significant opportunity for Thai tourism suppliers to form new partnerships, strengthen existing relationships, and expand their reach in the emerging Balkans market.
