Narita International Airport & Japan Airports Prepare New JESTA System
Japan’s airports, including Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and Fukuoka, are preparing to introduce the innovative JESTA system, a major step towards streamlining immigration for millions of international visitors. With the country’s tourism numbers expected to soar, the new system will eliminate in-person immigration checks, easing congestion and speeding up entry for travelers. This move is part of Japan’s broader effort to improve efficiency at airports and ensure a smooth and seamless experience for tourists, as the nation aims to reach 60 million visitors by 2030.
The Japanese government is considering a significant change to its immigration procedures by eliminating face-to-face immigration checks for most foreign tourists. This move is part of broader efforts to streamline entry processes and address the increasing number of international visitors. The new system, which is expected to be introduced in fiscal year 2028, would rely on an online pre-screening platform, known as the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization (JESTA). The system aims to simplify immigration procedures and reduce congestion at airports.
The Japan Immigration Services Agency is behind this proposal, and if approved, it would mark a significant shift in the way Japan handles immigration for foreign tourists. Travelers would be required to submit their travel details through JESTA before their departure. Immigration authorities would then review the information and decide whether to approve entry to Japan. One of the key aspects of the new system is the ability to prevent travelers who may have overstayed previous visas from boarding flights to Japan, as they could be flagged during the online pre-screening process.
