Japan Luxury Travel Surges with Imperial Hotel Kyoto's Yasaka Kaikan Opening
The Imperial Hotel, Kyoto has achieved a major conservation milestone for the historic Yasaka Kaikan, the landmark 1936 structure at the centre of the newly launched luxury property in Kyoto’s Gion district. After evaluation by Japan’s Council for Cultural Affairs, the building has retained its status as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property under its new name, “Former Yasaka Kaikan.” The designation highlights the successful preservation and transformation of the historic site while allowing it to continue serving a new purpose within the hotel.
Opened in March 2026, The Imperial Hotel, Kyoto represents a careful balance between heritage conservation and modern luxury hospitality. The hotel was developed through the adaptive reuse of parts of Yasaka Kaikan, a cherished Kyoto landmark that had experienced structural ageing, deterioration and growing concerns related to earthquake resilience. Instead of removing the historic building, the project focused on protecting its important architectural features and incorporating them into the hotel’s design. This approach ensures that the cultural identity and legacy of Yasaka Kaikan remain preserved for future generations while giving the historic property a renewed role in Kyoto’s hospitality landscape.
