Kerala Tourism earns a special mention by UNWTO for its Barrier-Free Tourism Project

Last year, Kerala announced that it will make the entire state, especially the tourist destinations, disabled-friendly by 2021. And now, its Barrier-Free Tourism Project has won global mention with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) that has hailed it as an ‘Emerging Global Destination’ in the Accessible Destination Awards 2019. As per a press release, Kerala Tourism Director P Bala Kiran received the conferment from UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili during the awards ceremony that was recently held in Madrid. The recognition was for implementing the project in Thrissur, the central Kerala district, which also became India’s only destination to win the honor. Further, Kerala has also been the first state to work as per the guidelines of UNWTO to make tourist destinations disabled-friendly. The award is given by the World Tourism Organization and ONCE Foundation that works for people with disabilities.
