Regional Tourists Fuel Bulgaria’s Summer Boom Despite Challenges

The tourism sector in Bulgaria is booming with the number of tourists from countries such as Romania, Greece, Turkey, Serbia, Denmark, UK, and Germany steadily rising. Itineraries like these enable huge numbers of people to visit Bulgaria and to find out for themselves why it is an emerging destination for both beach holidays and cultural explorations of towns and villages in its mountains and towards its beaches. According to the report, hotel operators had mixed results for the six months ended June 30, 2025. Thirty percent of hoteliers saw year-over-year performance on par with 2024 and another 30% said performance improved. 20% of hoteliers reported a 10% gain in staff levels, while that same percentage reported a 10% decrease, pointing to a labor market volatility influenced by seasonality, price pressure, and ongoing staffing deficits. Employment in Bulgarian hotels fluctuated widely in the first half of 2025. Around 30% to 50% of properties reported moderate staffing levels, while about one-fifth operated with occupancy below 30%. In contrast, approximately one-third of surveyed hotels reported occupancy rates between 50% and 70%, still below peak seasonal performance.

Shizuoka 2025: Adventure, Culture & Mount Fuji Await

Shizuoka Prefecture — only an hour by bullet train from Tokyo and where the iconic Mount Fuji stands — is about to become even more attractive to tourists, by offering new and exciting experiences in 2025. Related to Japan’s fall this year, and Koyama’s half-decade-long support of its promotion in the British media, Shizuoka, which with its natural beauty and rich history sitting at the base of its towering, snow-capped beacon of Mount Fuji, is now welcoming visitors with some unique activities from traditional Bushido experiences to exhilarating cycling adventures. These new experiences cater to many types of travelers, from culture vultures to outdoorsy types. The climbing season for Mount Fuji, one of Japan’s most famous landmarks, officially opened on July 10 for 2025, offering climbers the chance to hike the mountain until September 10. However, the climbing experience has undergone significant changes to enhance safety and sustainability. Visitors wishing to access Mount Fuji from Shizuoka’s three main routes—Fujinomiya, Gotemba, and Subashiri—must now obtain an entry permit via the Shizouka Fuji Navi app, which also includes a mandatory e-learning course on mountain safety. A new climbing fee of 4,000 JPY (approximately £20) per person has been introduced, which will be used for environmental conservation and trail maintenance. Furthermore, a restriction has been placed on entry between 2 PM and 3 AM for climbers who do not have a reservation at a mountain hut for an overnight stay. These measures aim to reduce overcrowding, improve safety, and protect the natural environment of Mount Fuji.

The changes are also aimed at better reflecting environmental goals established by the EU Green Deal. At present, Germany has some of the highest air passenger taxes in Europe, which many airlines and tourism boards believe acts as a deterrent to flying and the economic recovery of the travel industry. In reconsidering these taxes, the federal government hopes to help both the aviation sector and travelers.
